 In its pursuit to become a Competitive Commercial Power Utility within the Region, Botswana Power Corporation invites applications from suitably qualified, highly energetic, dynamic, result oriented, innovative, and customer focused individuals, who believe they can be part of a great team that delivers power to Botswana to apply for the below listed position not later than 11th April 2026.

Main purpose of the position

 To plan, organize, direct, control, coordinate and manage power infrastructure asset (generation, transmission and distribution) care and maintenance throughout the Corporation with the objective to maximise power system availability, reliability and ensure safe operation of the assets in a cost-effective manner. Provide an asset management framework, systems, processes at high level and decision making in optimising the full lifespan of the Corporation’s assets. Collaborate and coordinate with national departments responsible for operations of the system (generation, transmission and distribution) regarding Corporation asset management decisions and strategies. Develop strategies, policies and procedures guiding the management, operation, maintenance, and disposal of Corporation’s assets. The General Manager will align asset performance with financial sustainabilty, support tariff justitication,reduce systems losses, ensure availability of power supplies at all times and enable efficeint deployment of scarce capital of the Corporation.

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Establishes departmental strategic objectives in line with the Organisation’s mission, vision and overall strategic objectives and the Corporation’s business plans.
  • Provides strategic direction, policy formulation and focus in the continuous appraisal of the effectiveness of current Corporate asset projects practices (design, development, production and maintenance) and to constantly explore cost effective options in order to sustain and improve corporate performance and targets.
  • Develops operational models to evaluate capital development options which will optimise utilisation of infrastructure, plant and equipment and reduce overall operating costs.
  • Identifies strategic opportunities to enhance operational efficiencies and reduce operating costs through the innovative use of technology, out-sourcing and the integration of services. 
  • Manage all aspects of multiple related infrastructural assets projects and maintenance care to  ensure the overall program is aligned to and directly supports the achievement of strategic objectives.
  • Develops and manages approved capital and operational budget, approving expenditure in accordance with laid down procedures.
  • Reviews maintenance costs and identifies opportunities to reduce costs through strategic initiatives 
  • Evaluates tenders and makes recommendation for the awarding of contracts to ensure value for money delivery of goods and services and manages service level agreements for out-sourced activities.
  • Identifies opportunities for out-sourcing of projects and negotiates service level agreements on behalf of the organisation.
  • Develops, monitors and manages the department’s and projects budgets to ensure compliance with Corporation financial and reporting policies and procedures and maintain multi-year asset management project capital expenditure view.
  • Full asset life cycle ownership: successful project delivery will include full implementation from initiation to deployment for several initiatives simultaneously.

  • Advises the Chief Executive Officer on all professional and technical matters relating to the provision of asset management and care portfolio in engineering services, plant and equipment, engineering standards, systems and procedures. 
  • Overseas the implementation of the strategic and operational functions of the Department, including the Asset Management Strategy and including infrastructure development projects proposals.
  • Continuously monitor the adequacy and availability of resources and their reliability for operational use by ensuring the application of sound and cost-effective maintenance policies and practices.
  • Understand interdependencies between technology, operations and business needs and Demonstrate functional acumen to support how solutions will address client goals while maintaining alignment with industry best practices.

  • Provides the framework for the identification and implementation of creative and innovative ideas and processes to ensure continuous business improvement.
  • Delivers own prescribed outcomes and/or provides support services by using the organisations safety, health and environment systems and protocols.
  • Establishes and maintains governance arrangements for the delivery of asset care and projects, programmes, and portfolios:
  • Identifies and monitors asset management projects, programmes, and portfolio risks; plans and implements responses to the risks and responds to other issues that might affect them. 

 

Qualifications

  • A Degree in Electrical / Mechanical Engineering, or other relevant Engineering Degree from a recognised university.

  • A Masters Degree in Asset Management, or Business Administration (MBA) and or any other related Master’s Degree will be an added advantage.
  • Relevant Professional membership from a reputable institution is required.
  • Registration with Botswana Engineers Registration Board is required.

Experience

  • At least ten (10) years’ post-qualification experience, with a minimum of five (5) years at a senior management level, in the management of large-scale infrastructural assets within process industries, manufacturing, and/or utility environments

  • Experience in the implementation of ISO 55001 standards will be an added advantage.

  • Understanding of Electrical Power operational rules and regulations will be an added advantage.
  • Proven track record in reducing losses and improving asset utilisation.
  • Experience aligning asset management with financial and investment strategies is a significant requirement.
  • Exposure to utility transformation program is advatageous.
