Main purpose of the position

  • The Senior Power Engineer will provide technical leadership and oversight for the planning, design, implementation and monitoring of To plan, organise and manage the assigned scope of the GCF/World Bank funded Renewable Energy Support and Access (RESA) project under Component 2 ensuring its safe, timely and cost-effective delivery. The Senior Projects Engineer will manage Borolong electrification and associated Transmission & Distribution upgrades. The role ensures that all engineering activities meet international standards and World Bank requirements. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervises the execution of tasks and outputs within agreed timelines.
  • Ensures delivery of high-quality work in an efficient manner by breaking objectives into tasks, scheduling, guiding and maintaining discipline.
  • Matches resources to the process or operational requirements and creatively uses resources to complete work efficiently.
  • Manages multiple strategic projects impacting on the total organisation, using sophisticated program management methodologies and tools.
  • Oversees and executes multiple projects in line with set time and quality management standards by developing a master programme and sub-programmes, creating contractors/supplier contractual conditions and incorporating them into tender documents.
  • Establishes quality management plan and persons responsibilities for implementation, monitors implementation of quality assurance and reports on obligations.
  • Monitors and records information flow against the agreed information flow programmes.
  • Develops a cost / feasibility plan and establishes a cost coding structure for medium to large projects.
  • Monitors and reports on costs, controls changes to the cost plan and manage implementation of corrective action.
  • Identifies shortcomings in existing processes, systems and procedures.
  • Applies knowledge of the discipline and innovative skills to stay abreast with new developments to improve own efficiency.
  • Addresses problems as related to own field of expertise.
  • Applies technical skill to accomplish the job effectively, communicates and translates technical terms so that others can understand.
  • Aligns performance to organisational strategy, business model, revenue and profit drivers to create value.

  • Develops policies and processes to manage delivery / performance. Assesses risk and establishes mitigating remedies
  • Designs complete end to end transmission and distribution networks, advises clients and gives expert advice.
  • Manages the motivation and discipline of staff in area of responsibility in line with laid down procedures to realize the Corporation’s objectives.
  • Manages the performance of the team by working within a performance management system.
  • Adheres to all safety and loss control standards (Safety Health and Environmental) contained in the Corporation’s standards.
  • Undertake such other related duties as directed by the supervisor from time to time to meet the exigencies of the Corporation.

Qualifications

  • Recognised Degree in Electrical Power Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related field.
  • Membership of the Engineering Registration Board (ERB) is required.
  • Additional project management qualifications will be an addedadvantage.
  • Familiarity with World Bank or similar donor-funded project procedures and safeguards will be considered an asset

Experience

  • Seven (7) years post qualification experience in the power environment, two (2) years of which will have been in project management in a power environment.
  • Technical experience in transmission and/or distribution network projects, particularly in electrical lines and substation construction management, is required.
  • Familiarity with World Bank or similar donor-funded project procedures and safeguards will be considered an asset
